Bangladesh’s entertainment industry is witnessing the emergence of a new generation of performers, and Labannya Chowdhury is one of the young actresses gradually establishing her presence through character driven work. Her journey is particularly interesting because she received significant opportunities at an early stage of her career.

Labannya first drew wider attention through roles associated with Jaya Ahsan. In the film ‘Debi’, she portrayed Jaya Ahsan’s younger character. She later appeared as the teenage version of Jaya Ahsan’s character in ‘Nakshikathar Jamin’, creating a distinctive professional connection between the two actresses.

Early exposure to demanding roles

One of the defining aspects of Labannya’s career is her early involvement in narrative driven projects. In 2022, reports emerged about her starring in ‘Bakul’, directed by Aranya Anwar. The film revolves around life in the haor region and explores family struggles, social pressures and complicated relationships. Labannya played the title character, placing her at the centre of the narrative.

Such a role demands more than conventional screen presence. It requires emotional restraint, observational acting and an ability to communicate through subtle gestures. For a young performer, that can become an important apprenticeship in cinematic acting.

The production environment itself was demanding. The project was filmed in remote areas of Netrokona, including Khaliajuri and Madan. The production team had to travel by boat for several hours to reach locations, while limited daylight and difficult connectivity complicated the shooting schedule.

A significant chapter in ‘Nakshikathar Jamin’

‘Nakshikathar Jamin’, directed by Akram Khan, represents another important milestone in Labannya’s career. The film tells the story of two sisters who lose their family during the Liberation War and struggle to survive amid extraordinary circumstances. Jaya Ahsan played Rahela, while Labannya portrayed her character during adolescence.

The role required an unusually restrained performance. Labannya explained that the character was quiet, rarely smiled and expressed herself largely through actions, facial expressions and body language. This kind of performance can be particularly demanding because the actor cannot depend heavily on dialogue.

The production also emphasised natural appearance rather than elaborate styling. The intention was to portray an ordinary village girl, allowing the performance itself to carry the emotional weight of the character.

A recurring connection with Jaya Ahsan

Labannya’s association with Jaya Ahsan has become one of the more distinctive elements of her career. After appearing as Jaya’s younger character in ‘Debi’, she again played a younger version of the actress in ‘Nakshikathar Jamin’. In a 2024 interview, Labannya said Jaya herself had recommended her to the filmmaker for the latter project.

For an emerging performer, working within the orbit of an established actor can provide valuable professional exposure. Yet recognition alone does not build a lasting career. Consistent performances and the ability to inhabit increasingly complex characters ultimately determine an actor’s standing.

What lies ahead?

Labannya has also been associated with several other projects. Reports have mentioned films such as ‘Haor’ and ‘Aguner Pakhi’, along with short films including ‘Shiriner Ekattor Jatra’ and ‘Ayoner Golpo’.

She has also been listed in the cast of ‘Bonolota Express’, where she is set to appear as Ruby.

The most intriguing aspect of Labannya’s career is therefore not simply her age or appearance. It is the range of characters she has already been given an opportunity to explore.

From rural hardship to historical drama, her roles have placed her in narratives where performance matters more than glamour. That distinction could prove important as she moves forward.
