It will take at least 2 years to completely overcome the energy crisis: Finance Minister

Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury has said that Bangladesh’s ongoing power and gas shortages cannot be resolved within six months or a year. The crisis will require at least two years to be fully overcome, he said.

Speaking at a seminar organized by AmCham at the InterContinental Hotel in Dhaka on Sunday, the minister stressed that the economy cannot move forward without reliable electricity and gas supplies. He said the government is working continuously to address the energy crunch, which he described as a problem inherited from the past.

According to the minister, Bangladesh is pursuing a diversified energy strategy combining renewable energy, natural gas and coal based power generation. Such an energy mix is intended to strengthen future supply security while reducing vulnerability to prolonged shortages.

He also said the economy is gradually moving toward stability and that the government is attempting to improve the business environment by reducing bureaucratic red tape, corruption and harassment.

The remarks come amid persistent difficulties at CNG filling stations, where motorists have reportedly been forced to wait for hours for fuel, while gas shortages are placing additional pressure on businesses.
