Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has urged the people to remain vigilant and closely monitor those who are spreading confusion in the country.

The prime minister made the call while emphasizing the importance of political stability, public awareness and careful assessment of political actors based on their past conduct.

He said, “There are many people in the country who create confusion and spread rumours. We have to remain alert about them. We have to see what they did in the past. Considering their past, we have to keep an eye on them and monitor what they are doing in the future.”

He made the remarks as the chief guest at a programme held at the Old Kishoreganj Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The event featured the distribution of Family Cards among women and honorariums among imams, muezzins, priests, monks and other religious figures. Financial assistance was also provided to disadvantaged and physically challenged people, while a job appointment letter was handed to one person with a disability.

Emphasis on Political Stability

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman stressed the need to preserve stability in the country.

He said, “We have to keep the country stable. We cannot allow ourselves to be confused by the words of anyone spreading confusion. If such people come to mislead us, we have to give them an appropriate response as we did in the past.” The prime minister referred to several periods of political upheaval while urging people to assess political groups through the prism of their historical conduct.

He claimed that certain groups had not played a role on the streets during the Liberation War of 1971, the political developments of 1986 and 1996, or the democratic movement of the past 17 years. He also said BNP leaders and activists, along with those of its allied parties, had faced enforced disappearance, killings, persecution and repression during the movement of the previous 17 years.

Debate Over Reform

The issue of political reform also featured prominently in the prime minister’s address. He said those who had remained absent from the streets for 17 years but were now making major claims in the name of reform were spreading confusion. He claimed that BNP had first presented a framework for state reform before the public in 2022. He also referred to earlier reform proposals prepared under the leadership of former prime minister Khaleda Zia. The remarks place the current reform debate within a broader political chronology, with the government seeking to emphasize its own interpretation of the country’s reform trajectory.

Family Cards and Social Protection

The Kishoreganj programme also placed considerable emphasis on social welfare. The prime minister highlighted the implementation of Family Cards and Farmer Cards, allowances for imams and muezzins, and initiatives aimed at developing the younger generation into responsible citizens. He said social protection programmes needed to move forward quickly, alongside agricultural modernization and the creation of employment opportunities for young people through new factories and industrial establishments.

The underlying message was economic empowerment. According to the prime minister, development cannot be sustained if ordinary citizens are left behind.

Focus on Women’s Empowerment

The prime minister described women as half of the country’s population and argued that no nation can advance while leaving women behind.

He said the Family Card initiative was designed to help women become economically self-reliant and empowered, while also strengthening the financial foundation of individual families. He also highlighted plans to provide free education for women up to the undergraduate level, alongside government assistance for those achieving strong academic results.

Support for Farmers

Agriculture was another major component of the address. The prime minister described support for farmers and their economic empowerment as a government priority. He highlighted the introduction of the Farmer Card and said agricultural loans of up to Tk 10,000, including interest, had been waived, directly benefiting 1.3 million farmers. He also outlined plans to excavate 250 kilometres of canals nationwide to improve irrigation facilities and address water shortages. Such measures, he said, were intended to strengthen agricultural productivity while improving the economic resilience of farming communities.

Education, Culture and Youth Development

The prime minister also presented a broader vision for education. He said students should not be defined merely by institutional certificates. Instead, they should develop through sports, cultural activities and language skills so that they can grow into well-rounded citizens. He announced plans to revive the “Natutn Kuri” competition, originally introduced during the tenure of President Ziaur Rahman, as part of efforts to create opportunities for children and young people to develop their talents.

Support for Religious Figures and Vulnerable Groups

Religious figures were also highlighted in the government’s social welfare agenda. The prime minister said imams, muezzins, khatibs and other religious leaders serve as important guides within society and should receive special social allowances to help them achieve greater economic security. He also pledged continued state support for disadvantaged people, persons with disabilities and talented students. The prime minister further said the government had resolved retirement allowance complications affecting 123,000 teachers who had suffered deprivation during the previous period.

Employment and Economic Self-Reliance

The prime minister described BNP’s political philosophy as one centred on improving people’s livelihoods through employment, education, agricultural development and industrialization. He said the government was gradually implementing commitments made before the election and argued that ordinary citizens were witnessing the development process directly. He said, “Our goal is to work for the country and for the people. Our goal is to change the fortunes of the people. Only by changing the fortunes of the people can we change the fortunes of the country.” The event was chaired by Social Welfare Minister Professor AZM Zahid Hossain. State Minister for Textiles and Jute Shariful Alam, parliament members Fazlur Rahman, Mazharul Islam and Jalal Uddin, among others, addressed the gathering. The Kishoreganj programme consequently combined a political appeal for vigilance with a broad policy narrative centred on social protection, women’s empowerment, agricultural support, youth development and economic self-reliance.
