Business Associations Send Letter to the Prime Minister Demanding Shops Remain Open Until 10 PM.

Leaders of the Bangladesh Shop Owners Association have submitted a letter to the Prime Minister requesting that shops, retail markets, and shopping malls be allowed to remain open from 12:00 PM to 10:00 PM.

In the letter, submitted to the Prime Minister's Office on Monday, Association President Nazmul Hasan and General Secretary Arifur Rahman stated that the current policy requiring shops to close after 7:00 PM has had a severe negative impact on the country's retail sector. They said that rising business expenses—including shop rent, electricity bills, bank loan repayments, employee salaries, and other operating costs—have placed traders under significant financial pressure.

The association's leaders also noted that many customers, due to work commitments, are unable to shop during the daytime and usually visit markets in the late afternoon or evening. As a result, if shops, retail centers, and shopping malls are not allowed to remain open until 10:00 PM, businesses miss out on expected sales. This leads to reduced business activity, threatens employment, and negatively affects the country's overall economy.

Nazmul Hasan and Arifur Rahman further claimed that allowing businesses to operate from 12:00 PM to 10:00 PM would help protect the livelihoods of nearly 7 million shop owners and employees across the country.

The association leaders also argued that extending shopping hours would expand commercial activities, increase government tax revenue, and contribute to stronger economic growth.

Following the global energy crisis triggered by the conflict in the Middle East, the government decided at a Cabinet meeting held on April 2, chaired by the Prime Minister, that shops and shopping malls would close at 6:00 PM. However, after requests from the Bangladesh Shop Owners Association, the closing time was extended by one hour, allowing businesses to remain open until 7:00 PM.

Later, ahead of Eid-ul-Adha, the government temporarily extended business hours, allowing shops and shopping malls to stay open until 10:00 PM instead of 7:00 PM. The decision took effect on May 12. After the Eid holidays, however, the government reinstated the 7:00 PM closing time.
