This year's World Cup is going to be a record with 8 ‘olds’

The number of players aged 40 and over will be a record 8 in the 2026 World Cup. Footballers of this age have never been seen before in a tournament. Interestingly, since the start of the World Cup in 1930, 

the number of players aged 40 or above was only 8 in all previous tournaments. Brazilian media O Globo analyzed the list of 1,248 footballers participating in the World Cup.  The top eight players at the moment are Craig Gordon, Cristiano Ronaldo, Guillermo Ochoa, Luka Modric, Edin Zeco, Manuel Neuer, Josimar Diaz and Fernando Musler. Five of the eight are goalkeepers - Gordon, Ochoa, Noyer, Diaz and Musler.  And of these five goalkeepers, Gordon and Diaz will play in the World Cup for the first time. The oldest player on the list is Scotland's goalkeeper Gordon. Gordon, 43, could be Scotland's first-choice goalkeeper at the World Cup.  Scotland will play their first match against Brazil in Group C on June 24. Gordon will set the record for the oldest player in this World Cup. 

The record for the oldest player in World Cup history is held by former Egyptian goalkeeper Hisham al-Hadari (45 years and 161 days).  He set this record in the 2018 World Cup. Ronaldo, the second Portuguese superstar on the list, is heading to the World Cup with the dream of winning the title at the age of 41. Ronaldo will take part in the World Cup for Portugal for the sixth time.  Mexico goalkeeper Ochoao is also participating in the sixth World Cup. He is 40 years old. Most players at this age play outside of the world's top leagues.  Of the eight listed, only Modric (AC Milan) and Neuer (Bayern Munich) play in any of the top five leagues in Europe.
